History, Lineage and Honors

The 85th Medical Detachment (CSC) has earned the reputation as the Army’s premier, and most decorated combat stress control unit since its inception in 1943. As part of the world’s most powerful medical brigade, the 1st Medical Brigade, it is credited with numerous deployments worldwide during its short combat stress control history to include the IFOR, SFOR4 and SFOR5 task forces to Bosnia as well as other contingencies to Somalia, Haiti, Cuba, Hungary, Kuwait and CONUS.
The unit’s numerous battle streamers and unit history date back to World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. The unit was constituted in the Army of the United States on December 4, 1943 and activated on December 10, 1943 at Camp Ellis, Illinois. Reorganized as the 85th Composite Unit, it served in the Pacific Theater until its inactivation on November 2, 1945 in the Philippines. The unit was redesignated as the 85th Shock Detachment and saw Korean War service until deactivated on August 5, 1952 at Letterman Army Hospital, California. The unit was redesignated again on October 1, 1962 and allotted to the Regular Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky on October 22, 1962. The 85th served with distinction during numerous campaigns in the Republic of Vietnam until deactivation there on August 16, 1972. It was reactivated on October 1, 1993 at Fort Hood in it’s present organization.
The unit has credit for participation in 18 combat campaigns from 1944 to 1972, 3 Meritorious Unit Commendations, from 1964-to 1972, 4 Republic of Vietnam Crosses of Gallantry with Palm. From 1967 to 1972. And the Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Honor Medal awarded in 1970.
