539th Salvage Repair Company

The company, activated and trained at Camp Ellis has been overseas 10 months already and through their activity as a combat outfit and a service unit, they have shown their mettle and proved their worth. Landing in March, 1944 they faced a Japanese attack on the base perimeter.

In record time, the shops were completed and the unit got down to the business of salvaging and repairing every kind of Army clothing and equipment. In 7 months of activity the shoe shop handled 100,000 pairs of shoes, rebuilt about 700 shoes into orthopedic shoes. They also repaired pistol holsters, knife cases, baseball gloves and footballs.

The clothing repair shop averaged 70,000 pieces of clothing a month.

An innumerable amount of knapsacks, rifle belts, blankets, canteen covers, tents (3500 a month) and cots (1500 a month). (From the Story of Camp Ellis pg. 89)
